Abu Sayeed Chowdhury

Abu Sayeed Chowdhury ( Bengali: আবু সাঈদ চৌধুরী, Abu Said Caudhurī; born January 31, 1921 in Nagbari, Bengal, British India; † August 1, 1987 in London) was a politician from Bangladesh.

Biography

In 1971, Chowdhury was representing Pakistan in the UN Human Rights Commission in Geneva came as the efforts of East Pakistan to the sovereignty on 16 December 1971. He then announced his support for the new country, and proclaimed himself High Commissioner in the UK.

On January 12, 1972, he was President of Bangladesh. Although he was elected in April 1973 for a five-year term, he resigned already on December 24, 1973 after disagreements with Prime Minister Mujibur Rahman.

In 1975 he was briefly Minister of Foreign Affairs in the government of President Ahmad Khondaker Mostaq. He then returned to Geneva, where he coordinated the foreign aid to Bangladesh.

From 1978 until his death he was a member of the UN Sub-Commission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities. In addition, he was chairman in 1985 of the UN Human Rights Commission.
