Abu Yusuf Yaqub ibn Abd Al-Haqq

Abu Yusuf Yaqub ibn Abdalhaqq (Arabic أبو يوسف يعقوب بن عبد الحق, Abū Yūsuf Ya ʿ DMG qūb b ʿ Abd al - Haqq, . † 1286) was from 1259 to 1286, the third Sultan of the Marinids in Morocco.

During the conquest of Morocco by the Marinids under Abu Yahya Abu Bakr (1244-1258) Abu Yusuf Yaqub was as governor in Fes. After the death of Abu Yahya Abu Bakr he could prevail against his son Umar (1258-1259) and other relatives as rulers. In the following years he managed the consolidation of Merinidenherrschaft. For this purpose he built with New Fez an administrative center, at the same time to serve as chief stronghold. Due to the pacification of the empire and the final fall of the Almohads ( conquest of Marrakesh 1269 ) Morocco rose again to become the strongest military power in the Maghreb.

Because of the promotion of Abu Yusuf Yaqub marabouts had a reputation for great piety. He also undertook four campaigns in Andalusia, to support the ruling in Granada Nazari against the attacks of Castile. During the last campaign, he died in 1286 at the siege of Algeciras.
