Abune Mathias

Abune Mathias ( b. 1941 /42 in Sebuha, District of Agame, Tigray ( northern Ethiopia ) as Teklemariam Asrat ) is since 2013 the Patriarch of the Ethiopian Tewahedo Orthodox Church. His full title is His Holiness Abune Mathias, Sixth Patriarch and Catholicos of Ethiopia, Echege of the chair of St. Takla Haymanot and Archbishop of Axum.

Life

Born after the Ethiopian calendar 1934 Teklemariam, was ordained a priest in 1954 by Abune Markos deacon and 1963. He was appointed as the new Ethiopian Orthodox Bishop of Jerusalem, where he assumed the name of Bishop Abune Mathias. After 1992 he became Archbishop of North America and later Archbishop of the United States.
