Academia Guatemalteca de la Lengua

The Academia de la Lengua Guatemalteca ( " Guatemalan Academy of Language " ) is responsible for the supervision and standardization of Spanish in Guatemala. It is based in Guatemala City.

History

From 1871, academies were created in several Latin American countries for the care and standardization of the Spanish language along the lines of the Real Academia Española. As a last resort, founded in the 19th century academies was on 30 June 1887, the Guatemalan Academy of Language of the eight intellectuals Juan Fermín de Aycinena y Aycinena, Fernando Cruz, Ángel María Arroyo, Agustín Gómez Carrillo de Albornoz, Antonio Batres Jáuregui, José Matías Quinonez, Antonio Machado y Palomo and Guillermo Francisco Hall Avilés founded and officially recognized in the following year by President Manuel Barillas. In 1951, the Academy participated in the founding of the Asociación de Lengua Española de la Academias, in the Real Academia Española and the 21 currently existing worldwide academies work together for the Spanish language. As part of this collaboration, the Academy since the 21st edition (1992 ) interacts with in the publishing of the Diccionario de la Lengua Española. A number of typical Guatemalan expressions are hereby incorporated over the years in the dictionary. Even on the release of Nueva Gramática de la Lengua Española in 2009, the Academy has participated.

Organization

The 24 académicos de número are usually well-known authors such as, but also journalists, music, computer scientists, economists or philosophers. They are appointed for life.
