Academia Sinica

The Academia Sinica ( from the Latin for Chinese university;中央研究院Chinese, Pinyin Zhongyang Yánjiùyuàn ) today is the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of China on Taiwan. It is located primarily in the city of Nangang District of Taipei. It exisitieren several outsourced institutions: the Institute for Atomic and Molecular Research and the Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics are located on the grounds of the National Taiwan University in Taipei, the Center for Applied Research has a branch at the National Chiao Tung University. The establishment of a southern campuses in Tainan is planned.

It was founded in 1928 by Li Shizeng on the Chinese mainland. His companion Cai Yuanpei, who had been following the revolution of 1911 the first Minister of Education of the Chinese Republic, was its president. After in 1949 the Communists had won control of the mainland, the Republican Academia Sinica of the government was re- established in Taiwan. In the following years of political instability, their development was slow.

Just one month after the founding of the People's Republic of China has established on the basis of the Academia Sinica, a new Chinese Academy of Sciences, CAS (Chinese Academy of Sciences), whose government in Beijing and abandoned the previous name.

Today, the Academia Sinica in Taiwan is conducted in the rankings of the 4000 world's leading research institutions of the renowned Webometrics Ranking of World Research Centers at number 15.
