The Moldavian Academy of Sciences (Romanian: Academia de Ştiinţe a Moldovei, short ASM ) is a scientific institution in the Moldovan capital Chisinau. It is a leading center for basic research for the natural and social sciences in Moldova.

History

The Moldavian Academy of Sciences emerged from the Moldovan Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1961. In June 1946, the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR had decided to set up a research station in Chisinau. The head of the station was Veaceslav Volghin.

In October 1949, the research station has been converted into a separate department of the Academy. The department was in 1954 under the direction of historian JS Grosul. Important research areas were agricultural science and semiconductor physics, and the Moldovan language and literature. 1961 then saw the establishment of the independent Moldavian Academy of Sciences. Between 1970 and 1981, the Academy has published eight volumes of the Moldavian Soviet Encyclopedia ( Енчиклопедия советикэ молдовеняскэ ).

The Moldavian Academy of Sciences has its headquarters in a building in the district CENTRU. She is a member of the International Council for Science and the European Association ALLEA.
