The Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Czech Academy Ved Ceske Republiky (abbreviated AV ČR ), is the leading research institute in the Czech Republic. Do not confuse it with the Czech Academy of Sciences and Arts, which emerged from the founded in the Austro- Hungarian Empire, Czech Academy of Emperor Franz Joseph of Sciences, spoken word and art, and existed until 1952.

The Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic is engaged in basic research and applied research. The central administration of the Academy and forty research institutes are based in Prague, the other institutions in other cities of the country.

The Academy awarded numerous prizes, including the Heyrovský Medal.

History

The Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic was founded in 1992 as the successor to the Czech part of the former Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. Chaired by Jiří Drahoš. The Academy employs approximately 6,400 employees.

Structure

In the academy are 53 research institutes (see, Department of Philosophy, Astronomical Institute and Institute of Archaeology Prague). It is divided into three main divisions:

The main objective of the Academy is basic research. The Academy advises the State in the areas of research and development, operates national and international research programs and coordinates cooperation between applied research and industry. The institutes play with doctor degree programs also on education.

The highest self-governing body of the AV ČR is the Academic Parliament, which is composed to two -thirds of scientists from the individual institutions, as well as representatives from universities, state administration, representatives of industry and other famous personalities. The executive body is the Academic Council, represented by the Chairman of the Academy of Sciences. The Scientific Council is mainly concerned with political and scientific issues of the Academy. All bodies are elected for a period of four years. Monitored by an independent supervisory committee and evaluates the activities and plans of the Academy.

The Academy is funded from the state budget. The funding of scientific work corresponds to the international standard. In addition to the purely general financing, special project funding be realized more and more.
