Acanthastrea

Acanthastrea sp.

Acanthastrea is a genus of stony corals ( Scleractinia ). It comes in the Red Sea and tropical Indo-Pacific Ocean north to Japan and east front to the central South Pacific.

Features

Acanthastrea forms massive colonies that can grow flat and scale- like or dome-shaped. Acanthastrea colonies similar to those of stony corals Faviidae family or those of the genus Blastomussa. The Koralliten are cerioid or subplocoid, that is, they stand alone, close to each other or at a small distance and have a polygonal ( polygonal ) or approximately round shape. Each corallite is separated by a calcareous outer wall of Nachbarkoralliten. The septa of the Koralliten are sharply toothed. Acanthastrea colonies can be brownish, yellowish, red or greenish.
