Acarnania

Acarnania (Greek Ακαρνανία - Akarnanía ) is a mountainous country in Western Greece between Ambrakischem Gulf and the Achelous. It extends up to 1600 m above sea level. Main locations Akarnania were in ancient times Oiniadai at the mouth of the Achelous and further upstream Stratos.

Antiquity

In the Peloponnesian War, and later in the 4th century BC it was usually allied with Athens, a position it 429 BC at the Battle of Stratos and 426 BC, asserted in the Battle of Olpai. Before it was conquered in the 2nd century BC by the Roman Empire, it had to defend itself against the Aetolian federal government and Epirus.

Medieval and modern times

Until 1204 it was part of the Byzantine Empire, it was part of the Despotate of Epirus, since 1480 the Ottoman Empire. Since 1832, Acarnania is part of today's Greece and as the provincial part of the prefecture Etoloakarnania.
