Access Virus

The Access Virus is a manufactured since 1997 virtual analog synthesizer of the company Access Music Electronics. He is now in its fourth generation and is constantly developed.

History

Since its introduction in 1997, the virus has developed into an instrument much used in the electro scene with a large fan base. His sounds can be heard on countless contemporary productions.

Technical details

The Access Virus supports various forms of synthesis: Subtractive synthesis Among the (English subtractive synthesis ), the phase distortion synthesis ( engl. phase distortion synthesis, PD ), FM synthesis ( frequency modulation synthesis german, FM) and the beginning of the TI series wavetable synthesis (English wavetable synthesis ).

All virus models work on the basis of a digital sound processor and emulate classic analog oscillators whose basic waveform by morphing continuously from a pure sine wave with a sawtooth can be changed to a square wave. Further facilities include 63 spectral, entirely synthetic waveforms available. The waveforms of the oscillators can be influenced in many ways: among other ring modulation ( engl. ring modulation, RM ), phase distortion ( engl. phase distortion, PD ) or frequency modulation ( engl. frequency modulation, FM). The virus also has an extensive modulation matrix and since the TI series, the new waveform SuperSaw.

The filter section provides two independent, in various ways combined and modulated resonant filter many programming options. Again, the modulation matrix allows the creation of complex and more detailed sounds. The virus also has an oscillator saturation level as well as various modes of analog and digital distortion of the sound image.

The virus A contains a DSP56303PV66 by the company Freescale, which was formerly known under the name of Motorola. The virus B uses a DSP56311 and the virus C with a DSP56362PV120. These models also have a SAB515 or SAB535 microcontroller. The Virus TI models (except Virus Snow) use two parallel working Freescale DSPs.

Description

The virus product range is divided into series A, B, C and TI ( Total Integration ). In general, these are as Desktop/19-Zoll-Rack-Version than 3 octave and one 5 - octave keyboard version. It is virtual analog synthesizer in which the interface and operation of the device suggests an analog sound generation, but in reality work with digital chips, including those of the manufacturer Motorola.

There are also versions for Protools TDM ( ' virus TDM " ) and TC Powercore ( " Virus PowerCore ").

The sounds are usually divided into eight banks of 128 sounds in the TI- series there are 26 banks. The user can change the sound by the numerous potentiometers on the surface. Among the most important parameters include Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release, Cutoff and Resonance; in addition there are numerous effects and EQ available. The virus is controlled depending on the design of the keyboard or via the MIDI protocol. About MIDI controller commands all the controllers can be remotely controlled or record in a sequencer.

A currently unique feature found in the TI- series ("Total Integration" ): The synthesizer can be integrated by means of driver software as a VST, AU or RTAS plug- in sequencer existing environments. Thus, sample-accurate control is possible, also all the settings with the respective song will be saved. Almost all parameters can be controlled via the automation.

The Virus TI 2 range has the manufacturer's instructions with 25% more DSP power on towards the TI 1 variant. In addition, the design was somewhat " rounded".

On the Access home page, there are regularly new sounds available for free download. Also operating system updates are available there, because the operating system can be updated with sequencer and Bulk Dump; in the TI series, the update is performed via the enclosed programs.

The programming of the sound sets often incorporate music producer who mainly develops the sounds for their own productions, and then deploy these for sale or download.
