Ace Bailey

Irvine Wallace " Ace" Bailey ( born July 3, 1903 in Bracebridge, Ontario; † 7 April 1992) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player who played from 1926 to 1934 for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League.

Career

Its active NHL career began in the season 1926/27, at the Toronto St. Patricks and ended there in the season 1933/34, after he suffered severe head injuries in a game. On December 12, 1933, shortly before the end of the second third of the game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Boston Bruins at the Boston Garden, was Ace Bailey from Verteider the Boston Bruins, Eddie Shore, brought from behind with the bat the box. This was a revenge for a check, the King Clancy had previously given Eddie Shore. Ace Bailey was not the real target of the attack, as Shore actually wanted to meet Clancy. In this action, Ace Bailey was seriously injured and he remained unconscious and bleeding, lying on the ice. Bailey's teammates Red Horner then proposed Eddie Shore down unconscious. After the game, Bailey Shore forgave the attack, as body checks are part of the game. Shortly thereafter, however Bailey collapsed with cramps and again lost consciousness. The following night, it was not certain whether Bailey would survive this, because he suffered from severe brain hemorrhage. If Bailey had died, Shore had a manslaughter expected. Although Ace Bailey survived this severe injury, but his hockey career was over. For the attack on Bailey Shore received a lock of 16 matches (1 /3 of the season) and Horner has been banned for the rest of the year.

Bailey honor was also the first NHL All-Star Game held in 1934. On this occasion, the Toronto Maple Leafs also detained his shirt number, 6, for future players.

Ace Bailey was honored in 1975 with induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
