Acenaphthene (1,2- Dihydroacenaphthylen; 1.8 Ethylennaphthalin ) is a white to slightly yellowish solid, which belongs to the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Acenaphthene is found to 0.3% in coal tar.

Properties

In water acenaphthene is practically insoluble in benzene, ether, chloroform and heated alcohol, however, readily soluble.

Use

Acenaphthene is required for the production of plastics, dyes, insecticides, pharmaceutical products, but mainly for large-scale production of the Naphthalsäureanhydrids. Technically, it is obtained by hydrogenation of acenaphthylene.
