Acerra

Acerra is a town with 56 909 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Naples and the Campania region. She puts about 15 kilometers northeast of Naples.

History

Acerrae is as Oscan founded the oldest city in the region. It belonged to the Twelve Etruscan league of cities and later became the first Roman provincial city, the title of " civitas sine suffragio " (City without voting rights, in 332 BC ) received.

In the early Middle Ages Acerra was a Lombard county, which was in the possession of the families Medania and Aquino. A castle from the year 826 was later destroyed, the city sacked by Saracens 881. Under the Normans, the castle was rebuilt.

The city's name comes from Latin and means " incense box".

Acerra counts 13,981 households. Between 1991 and 2001 the population increased from 41,311 to 45,688. This represents a percentage increase of 10.6 %.
