Acetogenesis

The acetogenesis is a step of anaerobic degradation of biogenic substances in the fermentation. Here, the lower fatty acids formed during the hydrolysis and acidogenesis and lower alcohols are converted by acetogenic microorganisms primarily to acetic acid or its dissolved salt (acetate ). This stage of the anaerobic digestion may be regarded as a specific acidification.
