Acetyl

The term acetyl ( abbreviated as Ac ) is the chemical structure of -C (O ) CH3, which is composed of the carbonyl and methylene group. Is the acyl radical of acetic acid ( AcOH ). The name is derived from the Latin acetum = " vinegar " as well as from the ancient Greek ὕλη = " substance, matter ."

The acetyl group comes in many natural ( biological ) and synthetic molecules, such as acetylsalicylic acid ( aspirin), before. As acetyl coenzyme A acetyl groups are part of input or output or end products of many metabolic reactions. Chemical or biochemical addition of an acetyl group is known in the organic chemistry as acetylation, wherein the hydrogen atoms are replaced by an acetyl group. In biological systems, acetylations effected by transferring the acetyl group from acetyl coenzyme A to the respective substrate molecules.
