Achaia Clauss

Achaia Clauss ( Αχάια Κλάους ) is a wine estate of Patras known for Mavrodaphne wines.

History

1859 opened Gustav Clauss, who immigrated from Bavaria (→ Otto ( Greece) ), a wine trade. Two years later he founded together with Jacob Klipfel a winery, which he continues later alone, from 1869 Achaia Clauss wine is exported to Germany. 1872 establishes Clauss with Theodoros Harburg again a wine trade to enter into its own sales of wines. From 1908 the company is a leader in the manufacture of Mavrodaphne and important in the production of the Demestica, with the death of Clauss in the same year takes Gudert the company. By 1920, the company loses its dominant position, but can the second world war score again until the outbreak with large gains. 1983 new filling systems inaugurated.

The estate as a destination

The estate was a popular destination in the 19th century and was attended by almost all the Greek monarchs and their foreign guests, Otto von Bismarck and Franz Liszt stayed here. The jet set of the 1970s discovered for himself the estate again; so came inter alia Aristotle Onassis and Omar Sharif.
