Description

Appearance and leaves

Most members are woody plants: they grow in the form of trees and shrubs; rarely are there ( climbing ) herbaceous plants. At the branches, the leaves are alternate and spirally arranged or double row. The stalked leaves are entire or serrated.

Inflorescences, flowers, fruits and seeds

They are monoecious getrenntgeschlechtig ( monoecious ); the flowers are functionally male or female. The flowers are borne singly or in few inflorescences. The radial symmetry flowers are three to fünfzählig. The bloom is clearly divided into sepals and petals, as a special feature in clearly different number. The three to five sepals are fused in the lower part and opened already in bud stage. The three to five petals are fused bell-shaped. In the male flowers five to many free stamens are present, and the stamens are usually long. The female flowers contain a superior ovaries, consisting of three to five carpels and carries a pen with three to five scars.

The fruits are usually large. The distribution units ( diaspores ) are the seeds.
