Acharya

Acharya ( Sanskrit: आचार्य ācārya m; Pali:. Acariya ) is a title for a religious teacher (Guru ), which is by its own conduct an example. Acharya has different meanings in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.

In Hinduism ācārya called a spiritual teacher who introduces the student to the Vedas. The term is also used for scribes and can be directly appended to the name as Shankaracarya ( Çaìkaräcärya ) for Shankara.

In Buddhism, referred Acariya the spiritual teacher who introduces the student or novice in the dhamma. In contrast, instructs the upajjhāya / upajjhāyaka the students in the Vinaya ( the monastic rules ).

The top spiritual teachers of the Buddhist Order Arya Maitreya Mandala holds the title Acharya.
