Achatinella casta

Achatinella casta is an extinct species of snail from the endemic on the island of Oahu breathing land snail genus Achatinella.

Description

Achatinella casta reached a body length of 16.5 mm and a case diameter of 8.25 mm. The robust case was conical extended and mirror polished. There were both right-and left-handed also housing. The six coils were rounded margins at the top. The mouth was almost egg-shaped and quite small. The simple lip inside was thickened. The spindle was short with a tortuous brownish transverse lamella. The housing color was either white or yellow with extremely different black, brown, pink or white transverse bands, which were arranged in different ways.

Dissemination

The occurrence of Achatinella casta was limited to the region of the Waimalu - Waiau - chain as well as the districts of Ewa, Halawa and Waipio on the island of Oahu. The northern border of the distribution area, the valley below the Mauna Rua.

Status

Causes and timing of extinction are unknown. The type has become known by the collections of Wesley Newcomb, Charles Montague Cooke and Irwin Spalding.
