Pass

The Achenpass is a 941 m high mountain pass situated in the Bavarian Alps, part of the Alps in Germany.

Geography

The summit is located about 1 km north of the border with Austria and is located in the south of Bavaria in Mangfallgebirge. The pass connects the valley of Lake Tegernsee in the north with the Achen valley (Tyrol ) and the Walchental in the south. It separates the basins of Weißach / Mangfall / Inn and Walchen / Isar (both tributaries of the Danube ). On the pass is Stuben, a district of Kreuth. South of the pass from Lake Achen Achen valley branches off the Coming to the West as Walchental to Sylvensteinsee from. About the Pass leads a section of the German Alpine Road, in the relevant section, these are the federal highway 307

History

1495 started to develop the mule track over the Achenpass to a driveway. At the same time some fortifications (eg Kaiserwacht Tyrolean area ) were built along the driveway. Was transported mainly salt from the Saline Hall in Munich, which the road became an important trade route.

About the Achenpass led one of the most important military transit routes for the Bavarian army when it the time of Napoleon I. (above 1809) Tyrol ruled. Who controlled this pass and the fortresses in the municipality of Achenkirch ( Tirol), was able to achieve significant benefits.
