Achères, Yvelines

Achères is a commune with 19,606 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the region of Ile- de -France in the department of Yvelines Arrondissement Saint- Germain -en- Laye.

General

The village is located about 24 kilometers northwest of Paris city center. The community is west bounded by a loop of the Seine and southeast of the Forest of Saint -Germain -en- Laye. Between Achères and the neighboring village of Poissy Poissy is the car plant the car manufacturer PSA Peugeot Citroën.

Transport links

Achères is through the transport line RER A and the railway line Transilien Paris - Saint- Lazare connected with Paris. About the motorway connection, the neighboring village of Poissy, the A14 is reached. In the township the national road N184 leads past.

History

The area around Achères was not suitable because of the frequent flooding of the Seine for agriculture. Therefore, a six- kilometer-long embankment to protect against further flooding between the Bridge at Conflans -Sainte -Honorine and Poissy was built from 1847 to 1855. 1852 and 1866 there were epidemics of cholera.

At the edge of the forest, a marshalling yard was built in 1882, which has now closed. As a reminder of the importance of freight transport for the community a colorful boxcar was placed next to City Hall.

1898 and 1899 Achères was the venue of the tendered by the newspaper La France Automobile competition to achieve the speed record for road vehicles. In several duels between the Frenchman Gaston de Chasseloup - Laubat and the Belgian Camille Jenatzy the record of initially 63 km / h to 105 km / h has been improved. Victorious was Jenatzy with his La Jamais Contente electric-powered on 29 April 1899.

1940, the treatment plant was built in Seine- Aval. She was one of the first sewage treatment plants in France and processed waste water from all over the Paris area.

During the period of unrest in France in 2005 cars were also destroyed in Achères. In November 2005, a kindergarten went up in flames in the community.
