Achiel Buysse

Achiel Buysse ( born December 20, 1918 in Lochristi; † 23 July 1984 Wetteren ) was a Belgian racing cyclist.

With eleven years Achiel Buysse ran his first bicycle race, on a ladies bike, which had given him the grandfather, and he won. Against the wishes of his mother, he drove race.

From 1938 to 1950 Buysse was a cyclist and drove, due to world war and occupation, almost exclusively road race in his home country. As the first he won three times (1940, 1941 and 1943), the Tour of Flanders and is thus in line with Johan Museeuw, Eric Leman and Fiorenzo Magni.

Buysse, is revered in Belgium, especially in the Flemish part of a cycling idol; the Tour of Flanders led more than 30 times Wetteren in his home, where the winner of 1929, Jef Dervaes herstammte. In Wetteren, at a monument in honor Bruysses, begins a 32 -km-long " Achiel Buysse - fietstour "; the local baker sold " Achiel - Buysse Cake". As Wetteren 2009 stage finish of the Tour of Flanders had, the church was decorated with an oversized photo of Buysse.

Buysse is the grandfather of the professional racer Pascal Elaut and Luc Colijn; his son is the Keirin World Champion Michel Vaarten.
