Achill Sound

Gob at Choire ( Irish for " beak of the boiler ", English Achill Sound, officially is only the name in Irish ) is a small village in County Mayo (Republic of Ireland). Gob at Choire has 302 inhabitants (as of 2006) and is located at the eastern end of Achill Iceland, the largest island of Ireland and is part of a Gaeltacht area. Achill Sound is located directly at the Michael Davitt Bridge, over which the island is connected to the mainland.

Michael Davitt Bridge

The Michael Davitt Bridge (Irish Droichead Mhichil Mhic Dhaibhéid ) is a swing bridge that joins Achill Iceland with the Curraun Peninsula ( Curraun Peninsula ) on the Irish mainland. The bridge is named after Michael Davitt, a Fenian, and founder of the National Land League, the bridge officially opened in 1887.

1947 had to be replaced by a new one, the first, for the modern traffic has become too narrow bridge, which was built to the south of the old bridge. Also, it bears the name Michael Davitt Bridge. The bridge is owned by the Mayo County Council. Since the "new" bridge was no longer cope with the volume of traffic, it was replaced by a new building in summer 2008. The new building, which bears the old name, is 6.5 meters wide, 225.5 m long and weighs 390 tonnes. The bridge is illuminated at night by LED lamps, which were integrated into it.
