Achille Ernest Oscar Joseph Delesse

Achille Ernest Oscar Joseph Delesse ( born February 3, 1817 in Metz, † March 24, 1881 in Paris) was a French geologist and mineralogist.

Career

He studied in 1837 at the École polytechnique, 1839 at the École des Mines. In 1845 he became professor of geology and mineralogy in Besancon and 1850 professor of geology at the Sorbonne in Paris. From 1864 he was professor of agricultural economics at the École des Mines in 1878 and inspector generale des mines.

In early years examined as a mini engineer and he described several new minerals. He then devoted himself to the study of rocks and developed new methods for their determination and description. He was interested in the magmatic rocks of the Vosges, Alps and Corsica. In 1858 he created geological and hydrological maps of Paris. From 1860 to 1880 he edited the annual Revue des progrès de géologie, 1860-65 and 1865-78 with Laugel with Auguste Albert de Lapparent.
