Achilleus (emperor)

Aurelius Achilleus, usually referred to only briefly Achilles († 298 in Alexandria ) was a Roman rival emperor, probably briefly reigned in Egypt beginning 298.

Achilles was first corrector of the Emperor Lucius Domitius Domitianus counter, which had been 297, collected in the course of an insurrection which had broken out in space Thebes and had quickly up to Lower Egypt spread to the emperor. Diocletian defeated the rebellion down in the spring of 298. Perhaps Domitian died previously and Achilles followed after him, but fell during the Battle of Alexandria. This would explain why in the literary sources instead of Domitian only of Achilles is mentioned. Partial Domitianus and Achilleus were also held for one and the same person. The source location is overall problematic and sometimes very contradictory.
