Achish

Achish, son of Ma'och ( the name meaning and origin see Achish ) is according to the narratives of the Bible king of Gath in David's time.

On the run from Saul (1 Sam 21 EU ) David comes to the court of Achish to Gath. For fear of the king and his advisers, who recognize him as conqueror of the Philistines, he turns crazy. This list is not by looks of Achish. After 1 Sam 27 EU David goes out with his 600 over to Achish and receives Ziklag as a fief, from where he undertook raids to Geschuritern or Amalekites, and ravaged the country. He tells us Achish, he would make war on the south of Judah, this continues to give him confidence and ultimately takes him even as a bodyguard in the fight against the Israelites (1 Sam 28,1 f EU). Before the battle is on, but the rulers of the Philistines oppose this decision, so that Achish David sends back David and thus does not have to fight against the Israelites.

Also a king Achish of Gath, son of Ma'acha, is mentioned as a contemporary of Solomon in 1 Kings 2.39 f EU. Whether this same person is meant, remains uncertain.
