Achtung Baby

Studios

Achtung Baby is the seventh studio album by U2 and published on 18 and 19, respectively November 1991.

It received very favorable reviews and worldwide reached high sales (13 million records sold until 2012), after the band surprisingly completely new influences installed after her great success in the late eighties in their music, experimenting with the instrumentation and heralded a change of style. As had been expected rather that U2 will comply with their bestsellers of recent years and another album in the style of The Joshua Tree and Rattle and Hum would bring out, one first recognized especially the courage of this step. Many fans were seen in irritated; since U2 at the same time but gained new listeners proved Achtung Baby, in particular thanks to the Single One, ultimately to be commercially successful.

The twelve tracks on the album generate a total of darker mood than they had been accustomed to from the band, but were presented with a remarkably fresh sound and catchy structures. If you follow the superficial meanings and moods of each song, illustrates its course the breaking of a relationship between two people of strong euphoria at the beginning (Zoo Station, the first track ) on discord and accusations (So Cruel, the sixth title ) to deep depression ( Love Is Blindness, the final title ).

The album was followed by a multimedia presentation of hitherto unprecedented and technically intentionally exaggerated Zoo TV tour, U2 was also new and unusual ways and usually with several new songs began before an old piece was played. In particular singer Bono was in this context, a new image and now appeared in the form of a cynical, always sunglasses bearing rock stars.

In truth, the band showed signs of disintegration time and was on the verge of dissolution. Only the musical reorientation opened new perspectives.

The first signs of the new musical direction were then already at U2's cover version to Night and Day by Cole Porter tribute album Red Hot Blue. For the first time appeared drum machine and then modern synth sound on a U2 song.

During the recording of the new album Achtung Baby then seven CDs were stolen with unfinished songs from the studio. This coveted among fans material was quickly accessible in the form of bootlegs. The best of the seven CDs was taken on a comprehensive three CD box - bootleg under the name Salome with the fans.

To the title of the album

The German title of the album Achtung Baby explained by the fact that the album was created for the most part in Berlin's Hansa Studios. This is a quote from the popular musical Springtime for Hitler Mel Brooks ( The Producers, 1968). In the song The Fly warning is also issued.
