Acquafondata

Acquafondata is a municipality in the province of Frosinone in the central Italian region of Lazio, with 272 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012). It is located 165 km southeast of Rome, 84 km east of Frosinone and 25 km north-east of Cassino and is the easternmost municipality of Lazio.

Geography

Acquafondata situated on a hill on the edge of the Monti della Meta. It is a member of the Comunità Montana Valle di Comino.

The municipality consists of the villages Casalcassinese and Serre.

The neighboring municipalities are Filignano (IS), Pozzilli (IS), and Vallerotonda Viticuso.

History

Acquafondata originated in the uncertain days after the fall of the Roman Empire, when the population left the plains and fortified places was based on easily defensible hills. The first mention of Acquafondata was 1032, when the Counts of Venafro the site of the Abbey of Montecassino gave when it remained for a long time.

In the 19th century it was a center of Brigantismus. During World War II Acquafondata suffered severe damage, as it was on the Gustav Line. In 1806 the city to the province of Terra del Lavoro and 1927 to the newly founded province of Frosinone. From 1806 to 1902 Acquafondata was associated with Viticuso in a community.

  • The baroque church of San Rocco was built in 1692.
  • In medieval hamlet Casalcassinese the ruins of the castle can be seen.

Every third Sunday in August there is the Sagra degli gnocchi (Festival of gnocchi ).
