Acquapendente

Acquapendente is a municipality with 5619 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Viterbo in the Italian region of Lazio.

Geography

Acquapendente is the northernmost municipality in the Lazio region. It lies on a hill above the valley of the Paglia. The eastern municipality is occupied by the Nature Reserve Monte Rufeno, which is determined by forests of oak and chestnut. The reserve has a rich flora and fauna. Even wolves have been sighted.

The municipality covers an altitude 190-750 m asl

The municipality is located in the seismic zone 2 (medium endangered).

Districts of Acquapendente are Torre Alfina and Trevi Nano. It borders on the neighboring communities Allerona (TR ), Castel Giorgio (TR ), Castel Viscardo (TR ), Grotte di Castro, Onano, Proceno, San Casciano dei Bagni (SI ), San Lorenzo Nuovo and Sorano ( GR).

Traffic

Acquapendente is located 128 km north of Rome, 52 km north- west of Viterbo and 12 km north of Lake Bolsena. It lies on the Strada Statale SS 2 Cassia, which connects Rome with Siena and Florence. The nearest train station is 28 km from Orvieto.

History

The area of present-day Acquapendente is old Etruscan and Roman settlement area, as is apparent from numerous artifacts nearby. The town itself, however, was first mentioned in the 9th century AD, in connection with a castle Farisa or Arisa on the Via Francigena. 964 the name was mentioned Acquapendente (m) for the first time in a document of Emperor Otto I.. The city's name ( "Hanging Water " ) refers to the numerous small waterfalls in the area from which the Paglia feeds, which determines the local boundary between Lazio and Tuscany.

The city was later to Tuscany. At the turn of the 14th and 15th century it was part of the territory of Siena. From 1499 the town belonged to the Papal States.

Acquapendente originally stood under the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of Orvieto. After the fall of the Duchy of Castro the bishopric of Castro in 1649 moved to Acquapendente. In 1986 the diocese was incorporated into the diocese of Viterbo. Since 1991 Acquapendente is titular.

The city is a member of Cittaslow, a company incorporated in Italy in 1999 motion to decelerate and increase the quality of life in cities by environmental policy, infrastructure policy, urban quality, appreciation of indigenous products, hospitality, awareness and scenic quality. She also belongs to the Comunità Montana Alta Tuscia Laziale.

Alberto Bambini (PD ) was chosen for the second time as mayor in May 2011. His center-left alliance also with 8 of 12 seats, the majority in the City Council.
