Acquavella Galleries

The Acquavella Galleries is an art shop, founded in 1921, which since 1967 has its offices in the Upper East Side of Manhattan on East 79th Street # 18.

History

The founder of the gallery was Nicholas Acquavella, who immigrated in 1919 coming from Naples to the United States and two years later, at the address 598 Madison Avenue an art trade with Italian paintings began. The gallery owned by the family since that time grew through the sale of paintings by the Italian Renaissance and Baroque to American private collectors and museums. 1956 acquired the gallery, as well as Armand Hammer, a part of the collection of the film actor Edward G. Robinson. Since 1960, when the founder's son, William Acquavella, co-owner of the gallery has been paintings by European painters of the 19th and 20th centuries were taught. William was able to acquire in 1965 from the estate of Pierre Bonnard 22 paintings, of which he before they were shown in the gallery, already 17 could sell to collectors private.

1960, the Acquavella Galleries merged into a subsidiary of Sotheby's for company Acquavella Modern Art with the auction house Sotheby's. This merger acquired in 1990 the entire stock of the Pierre Matisse Gallery in Manhattan. William Acquavella means could sell his expert knowledge and thanks to its relationships with collectors and the museum world, about 2300 works by artists of the classical modern privately or at auctions.

Meanwhile Acqua Vellas daughter and two grandchildren are active in the gallery. The British painter Lucian Freud was represented until his death in 2011 of Acquavella Galleries.

Misadventures

  • 2006 damaged the casino owner Steve Wynn to be Pablo Picasso image Le Rêve from the year 1932 in the premises of the gallery, after he had sold it for U.S. $ 139 million to the hedge fund manager Steven A. Cohen. The deal was canceled after this damage.
