Acridine orange is an acridine dye that is used in molecular biology for the detection of nucleic acids, DNA and RNA used. Furthermore, it may be used to detect acidic compartments within cells.
Use
Acridine orange as a fluorescent dye is used to distinguish between DNA and RNA. The DNA - dye complex shows an absorption maximum at 502 nm and an emission maximum at 526 nm (green ), while the RNA - dye complex has an absorption maximum at 460 nm and an emission maximum at 650 nm (red).
