Acrosin

Acrosin, in some publications also named acrosin, symbol ACR is an enzyme from the family of peptidases. The EC number is 3.4.21.10.

Occurrence

Acrosin is the main proteinase in the acrosome of mature sperm. It is a typical representative of the serine proteinases with trypsin -like specificity of the. The acrosome is the inactivated precursor protein Proakrosin. The active form of the enzyme brings about the dissolution ( lysis) of the zona pellucida, the protective shell of the egg. This allows the sperm penetration into the egg.

Proacrosin is first detectable in the course of spermatogenesis in the haploid spermatids.

The gene encoding the protein is human acrosin gene on chromosome 22 q13.3 locus.

Associated with acrosin Syndrome

A lack of acrosin, respectively Proakrosin, leads to infertility in men.
