Across Language Server

The Across Language Server is a software platform for computer-aided translation that has additional program modules for project management. The software is used by the company Across Systems from Karlsbad near Karlsruhe - founded in 2005 as a spin -off of Nero AG - Glendale and manufactured in Los Angeles developed and marketed.

The software works similar to SDL Trados or memoQ. Translation units and terminology entries are stored in a local or in a central MSSQL database ( depending on the configuration of the project) and the Across Language Server As with the server solutions of these two programs.

In addition to the server - which is available in different versions - there is still a single-user version called Across Personal Edition with local MS- SQL database. With this single application, a connection to the server is possible. This means that both the processing of local projects as well as the access to the Across Server is possible. This single-user version is free for freelancers.

Version History

The Across Language Server is based on an MS- SQL database as backend and was introduced as a version 5 in 2009. During the year 2014, the next version 6 should appear.

Product Details

It allows processes that work together customers, agencies and translators based on the same translation. Process automation - eg commissioning defined translation service providers depending on text type and target language - in addition facilitate collaboration. Essential elements include a translation memory system and a terminology system. There are also tools for project management and for control of the translation workflow.

The Across Language Server is used by hundreds of companies as a central translation platform; inter alia by 1 & 1 Internet AG, HypoVereinsbank, Miele, ThyssenKrupp and J. Eberspacher GmbH & Co. KG.

Criticisms

At the extensive single-user version various criticisms are repeatedly expressed:

  • The single user version is primarily intended as a corporate solution or as a connection to the server. Accordingly, there is only limited compatibility to document and file formats of other CAT tools. For example the ttx format imported but not exported.
  • In previous versions, the comparatively slow speed is deplored.
