ACT (test)

The ACT, better known as American College Testing Program or American College Test, is an American performance test for university entrance, the (SAT ) of the College Board was created in 1959 as a competitor to the Scholastic Aptitude Test, which also represents such a test. The changes in the SAT in 2005 reflecting, in February 2005 the ACT also provides a typing test. Nearly every college accepts and treats ACT and SAT equivalent.

ACT Inc.

Originally founded as the American College Testing Program, Inc., the name of the ACT Inc. changed in 1996 in its present. The individual letters have here no concrete meaning. 2002 the company was restructured and received the departments "Education" (Education) and " Workforce Development " ( workforce training ). Both are supervised by their own boards of directors. 2005 was also the founder of ACT International. It consists firstly of the ACT Education Solutions GmbH and from the ACT Business Solutions BV The former helps students from all over the world who are planning to study at English-speaking institutions to improve their knowledge of the English language. The latter is aimed at the same target to the employees of internationally active companies.

Acceptance

The ACT is usually used for recording to a university, but sometimes also for placement in a class. The vast majority of universities covers the ACT and the SAT equivalent. In the past, tended Situated on the coastal universities to prefer the SAT, but that changed during the last decades. Format

The default format of the ACT consists of four multiple-choice subtests: English skills, reading, mathematics and scientific reasoning. These are measured by a natural number from 1 to 36. The ultimate result of the exam is the average of the results of the subtests. In addition, students who have decided to also take a test in writing received a rating of a natural number from 0 to 12 and a few remarks regarding their essays. The result of the test in writing shall not be included in with the overall result.

Knowledge of the English language

The first part of the exam consists of a 45 - minute test on grammatical and rhetorical knowledge of the English language. The 75 questions in this section consist of tasks for syntactic correction of a sentence, the logical order of sentences in a paragraph, and the intention of the author.

Mathematics

The English test followed by a 60-minute test in mathematics. It consists of a total of 60 questions, each with 14 over tasks from the field of ( pre-) algebra, 10 tasks from the field of elementary algebra, 9 tasks of advanced algebra, 14 questions on simple geometry, 9 questions from the Analytical Geometry and 4 tasks from the field of trigonometry. The ACT allows a non- graphical calculator for these tasks.

Reading

This 35-minute subtest consists of 40 questions about the understanding of four texts, each with one of the following areas: prose (short story or novella ), social sciences (history, economics, psychology or political science ), humanities ( art, music and architecture) and Natural Science (physics, biology or chemistry).

Scientific argumentation

This is followed by an also 35 -minute test with 40 questions on the three sub-areas: graphical representation, interpretation of research results and conflicting opinions.

Letter

The optional subtest in writing consists of a 30-minute essay on a social issue. This essay is then of two specially trained proofreaders a score 1-6 assigned (0 is only for empty Ausfüllformen, essays which were written in English, subjects missed or unreadable essays used). These are then added together and thus give a total score for the test in writing 0 to 12, however, the two proofreaders to conflict by more than one point, decided by a third party.

Availability

The ACT is offered within the U.S. 4 to 6 times per year (depending on the State). Here, each finds a test always Saturdays during the months of September, October, December, February, April and June.

Outside the U.S.

Outside the United States are the ACT Inc. sometimes out other versions of the test. In some cases, one and the same test is performed again and again. So it was, for example, in 2007 several students in Chile possible to achieve an above-average total score of 30 or more, because they had taken the same test multiple times. Until now, the ACT Inc. showed no response to this incident.

Statistics and comparison with the SAT
