Action for World Solidarity

The Action for World Solidarity Association ( ASW ) is a developmental non-governmental organization that supports projects in India, Africa and Brazil.

It was founded in 1957 and is thus one of the oldest development organizations in Germany.

Birth of the ASW is the " call for the hungry ", which was initiated in 1957 by Lothar Kreyssig and signed by well-known public figures, including Heinrich Albertz, Willy Brandt, Heinz Galinski, Kurt Scharf and Otto Suhr. The people in postwar Germany were asked to forego one meal a week and donate the money saved for the hungry in poor countries.

Unlike many other organizations, the organization delegates since their inception no " development workers " or "experts." The Action for World Solidarity was a pioneer in it, that projects supported by people called on site to life and be responsible for the implementation. Promoting objective of ASW is financially and conceptually to empower disadvantaged groups locally so that they make long-term and independent social change in their countries. Main topics of this work are the protection of human rights, the empowerment of women and the protection of the environment in the countries of the South.

Currently over 60 projects in Brazil, India and Africa are promoted in collaboration with partner organizations. The work is financed to 95 percent from donations.

The Action for World Solidarity is a signatory to the initiative Transparent civil society.
