Active layer

In the polar summer thawed and partially highly water -soaked layer of the permafrost is Auftauboden called.

The Auftauboden thaws in different thickness, depending on the soil and rock material and the composition of the vegetation cover.

Often the Auftauboden is so heavily soaked with moisture that it comes to solifluction or Kryoturbation.

The thickness of the Auftaubodens is toward the poles a few inches, achieved in Siberia several meters thickness, up to a thickness of 20 to 40 meters.
