Acton is a small town in the southeast corner of Marion County, Indiana. He is a part of the city of Indianapolis. The place was named after a General Acton.

Former names

Acton was called until 1854 Farmersville. In 1854 it was renamed after the U.S. postal service had found out that there was already a town called Farmersville in Posey County.

History

Once Acton was a busy city. At those times there was a blacksmith, a pharmacy, a bank, a telephone office, two grocery shops, a roundhouse, a post office, a school, three churches, three gas stations, a car salesman and even two grain elevators.

One of the grocery stores was the Knights of Pythias building, which was located in the Exchange Street. It was next to the railroad tracks. However, it was destroyed in a fire in 1962. A new building was built in 1967. The second shop is no longer used, but still stands at the corner Swails Street - McGregor Road.

The forge was owned by Virgil Russell, who resigned from the forging in 1970 and the store in 1977 sold to Clifford A. ( cookie) Kight. To date, the store is known as cookies Auto Body Shop.

The grain elevators were also destroyed during the fire ( 1973-74 ). On the former location is now home to an auto repair shop.

The pharmacy was located at the corner Swails Street - House Street. This area burned from 1946 also and was not rebuilt. He was in front of the former U.S. Post office building, which was located in Exchange Street.

The former car salesman still stands and is currently used as Doug McKinney 's tree service.

The Acton state banking was located next to the Post Office. In 1924 it was attacked by three armed men who escaped with $ 3,000 and were never caught. The former banker was Ben McCollumn. In 1934, the bank closed its doors and the building was used as a gun shop and a restaurant.

There were three gas stations in Acton. One was on the corner of Exchange Street - Mc Gregor Road. Another was at the corner of Acton Road - Virgil Street. The third is still present today, at the corner Swails Street - Acton Road. Since 1982 it is owned by Mike Walker.

Of the three former churches in Acton is only one today. Than church in operation The Acton Baptist Church is located since 1866 in the Exchange Street. Since the church was destroyed in 1927, the building was rebuilt in 1929. In 1962, the " Judson Hall " has been added.

From 1875 there is to this day the school at the same place. The original building was a one-story house. Until 1912 it was used as a new school was then built with two floors. This was used until 1965. 1972 new classrooms and a library were added.

In March 1986, a tornado swept through Acton and caused much damage. Although many of the buildings are over 100 years old, they have weathered the storm.

Acton was always designated as rural area, but since 2004 there is a new residential area in the western edge of Acton. It is located between the Maze Road and Exchange Street.
