Actors Studio

The Actors Studio is a famous American drama workshop in New York City ( Old Labor Stage, 432 West 44th Street) with a branch in West Hollywood ( Actors Studio West). The studio has the form of a non-profit organization whose members are professional, already trained actors. In the studio, actors work together to develop their acting skills in an experimental environment in which they can take interpretive risks without the pressure of commercial roles in coming. The studio offers the option of either watching other members while playing scenes, or audition itself, and then to face the criticism of others. Also the training of playwrights and directors, the studio has been devoted to appropriate departments.

The Actors Studio was founded by Elia Kazan, Cheryl Crawford and Robert Lewis in New York in October 1947. The studio is known for the refinement and the doctrine of method acting ( methodological drama ), an acting technique that requires the actors to put themselves in the role. It was originally developed in the 1930s by the American theater collective Group Theatre and is based on the innovations of Konstantin Stanislavski. Started in 1949 a friend of the founders Lee Strasberg began teaching there and was soon alone drama teacher. In 1951 he was appointed artistic director, a position he held until his death in 1982. Under his leadership, the studio reached worldwide recognition.

The studio itself has no acting training, but operational from 1994 to 2005, together with the New School University, the Actors Studio Drama School in New York, were trained at the master's students in drama. Since the autumn of 2006 provides the Actors Studio along with Pace University to a three-year Master's degree ( Master of Fine Arts ). Regardless of the Actors Studio, there is the drama school founded by Lee Strasberg in 1969 the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute.

The television program Inside the Actors Studio, which airs on the American cable TV channel Bravo, shows depth interviews with actors, many of them graduates of the studio. In Germany it runs Ungeschminkt under the title and broadcast by 3sat, the third party programs ARD and RTL Living Digital.
