Acworth is a city in Cobb County in the U.S. state of Georgia in the United States. According to the official estimate of 2012, the city of 21215 inhabitants in an area of 19.7 km ². The city is 53 km north-west of Atlanta off Interstate 75, also known as Dixie Highway.

History

Acworth was established on 1 December 1840 and named after the hometown of Joseph L. Gregg, an engineer of the Western & Atlantic Railroad, Acworth in New Hampshire.

During the Civil War the city was burned down in November 1864 by General William T. Sherman, just a few houses escaped the flames. Parts of the movie Footloose was filmed here.

Geography

Near the city, which is popularly called " The Lake City", there are those who in the late 40s, artificial lakes Lake Allatoona and Lake Acworth.
