Adair County (Missouri)

The Adair County is a county located in the U.S. state of Missouri. In 2010, the County had 25,607 inhabitants and a population density of 17.4 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Kirksville, named after Jesse Kirk, an early settler in the area.

History

The Adair County was formed on January 29, 1841 from parts of Macon County. It was named as the Adair County, Kentucky to John Adair (1757-1840), a former governor of Kentucky, and a general in the War of 1812.

The first permanent settlement began in 1828, 25 years after the Louisiana Purchase. Most settlers came from Kentucky. The first settlement was about 10 kilometers west of Kirksville, along the Cariton Rivers.
