Adair County (Oklahoma)

Adair County is a county located in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. In the census in 2010, the County had 22 683 inhabitants and a population density of 15.2 inhabitants per square kilometer. It was named after the Indian family Adair of the Cherokee tribe. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Stilwell, which was named after Arthur E. Stilwell, a pioneer of the American railroad.

History

The Adair County was formed on 16 July 1907 as original county of former Cherokee country. It was named after the Adair family of Cherokees. Near Westville exists today, built in 1836 by the Trail of Tears Cherokee Old Baptist Missionary Church. Near Watts in 1838 the military post Fort Wayne built, which was abandoned in the meantime, but in 1862 the American Civil War played an important role.
