Adair Turner, Baron Turner of Ecchinswell

Jonathan Adair Turner, Baron Turner of Ecchinswell, of Ecchinswell in the County of Hampshire ( born October 5, 1955 in Ipswich ) is a British business leaders and university teacher who is since 2005 member of the House of Lords. Besides acting Lord Turner as chair of the Committee on Climate Change. Until 31 March 2013, he was Chairman of the UK Financial Services Authority Financial Services Authority.

Life

Study and career

After schooling Turner began studying history and economics at Gonville and Caius College, University of Cambridge, where he graduated in 1978 1974. He then worked as a part-time tutor and lecturer in economics at Gonville and Caius College and later was also chairman of the Institute for Overseas Development ( Overseas Development Institute ). In addition to his teaching, he also worked in the private sector and was employed by BP and then from 1979 to 1982 at Chase Manhattan Bank.

In 1982 he moved into the private sector and initially worked for the management consulting firm McKinsey & Company until 1995, for which he recently built up its branches in Eastern Europe and Russia between 1992 and 1995. After leaving McKinsey & Company in 1995 he became Secretary General of the British Business Federation Confederation of British Industry (CBI ) and has held this position until 1999. Afterwards it was between 2000 and 2006 Vice Chairman of Merrill Lynch Europe and there at the same time senior consultant.

In addition to that, he was the Commission's 2002-2006 Chairman for low wages ( Low Pay Commission ) and at the same time between 2003 and 2006 Chairman of the Pensions Commission, an independent government institution that advises the Minister for Work and Pensions on issues of retirement and long-term savings accounts.

House of Lords member and chairman of the Financial Market Authority

Due to his many years of service, he was raised by a Letters Patent dated 7 September 2005 as a Life Peer with the title of Baron Turner of Ecchinswell, of Ecchinswell in the County of Hampshire in the peerage. On October 12, 2005 saw its introduction ( Introduction) as a member of the House of Lords. In the House of Lords he belongs to the group of non-party peers, the so-called Cross Bencher.

After leaving Merrill Lynch Europe 2006 Lord Turner was director of Standard Chartered Bank, where he worked until September 2008. During this time he was in January 2008, also chairman of the Climate Change Committee and worked next as a visiting professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science ( LSE ) and at Cass Business School, City University London. In addition, he was active as a trustee of the British National associations of Save the Children and the WWF.

In September 2008, finally, he was appointed as Chairman of the UK Financial Services Authority Financial Services Authority ( FSA). At the same time Lord Turner is a member of the Executive Board ( Court of Directors ) of the Bank of England.
