The Adak Airport ( Adak Airport, IATA code: ADK; ICAO code: PADK ) is a commercial airport in Iceland Adak in the Aleutian Islands (Alaska, USA). It is the largest and most modern airport in the Aleutian Islands and has two asphalt runways. Built by the U.S. Navy for naval air transport westernmost of the USA airport is well equipped and has an instrument landing system.
History
During the Second World War air base was established on Adak Iceland by the U.S. Navy. In 1995, the closure of the military base and the conversion into a civilian airport was ordered by a decision of the Federal Government. However, the military remain as part of the environmental program of the Navy on Adak. This decision made it possible to return the country to the Aleut Corporation.
