Adalberon (archbishop of Reims)

Adalbero of Reims ( † January 23 989) from the family of Wigeriche was from 969 until his death, Archbishop of Reims.

He was a son of Count Gozelo in Bidgau and Methingau, and Uda of Metz, hence a brother of Count Gottfried, called the prisoner, of Verdun, paternal nephew of the bishop Adalbero I. Metz, a maternal nephew of the Archbishop Wichfrid of Cologne.

As a loyal follower of Emperor Otto I, he was 969 Archbishop of Reims and Lord Chancellor. He made his residence intellectual and artistic center, and adorned his cathedral with bronzes and windows. To his scholastics he made Gerbert of Aurillac.

In the conflict between the Carolingians, Lothar († 986 ) and Louis V. († 987 ), the Duke Charles of Lower Lorraine, the German Emperor Otto II and Hugh Capet, in which he was deeply involved, he narrowly escaped a treason trial in Compiegne first 985, then 987 a second time.

He anointed 979 Louis V, the last Carolingian king of France, as well as on 3 July 987 his ally Hugo Capet, after his election, which he chaired, and finally his son, the future Robert II
