Adalbert, Margrave of Austria

Adalbert the Victorious (c. 985, † May 26 1055 in Melk) from the house of Babenberg Margrave of Austria was 1018-1055.

Adalbert was in the 1010 Count Schweinachgau ( Lower Bavaria ), 1011 Count in Künziggau ( Lower Bavaria ), and in 1018 succeeded his brother Henry I the Strong as Margrave of Austria Mark.

He extended the eastern boundary of the Bavarian Marcha Orientalis up to the March and the Leitha and supported King Henry III. in the fight against Hungary and Bohemia. He resided in the Lower Austrian Babenbergerburg Melk, Melk Abbey, where later arose.

He was married to Glismod, the sister of the Bishop Meinwerk of Paderborn, and then with Frowiza, daughter of the Doge Ottone Orseolo, and as the brother of the Hungarian king Peter Orseolo.

  • His son Leopold ( Luitpold, Lippold ) died in 1043 as a newly appointed Margrave of Hungary marks.
  • His son Ernst was his successor in the Margraviate of Austria.
