Adalberto Álvarez

Adalberto Álvarez Cecilio Zayas ( born November 22, 1948 in Havana ) is a Cuban pianist, arranger and band leader of the group Son 14 ( 1978-82 ) and Adalberto Álvarez y su Son ( since 1984).

Alvarez grew up in Camagüey in a musical household. At age nine, he became a member of a youth orchestra, which led his father. At 18, it was clear that he would pursue a musical career: he began a bassoon studies in Havana at the Escuela Nacional de Arte and directed until after studying the Orquesta típica del Plantel escolar, where he worked with rising stars such as José Luis Cortés, Joaquín Betancourt and Emiliano Salvador had to do. The Orquesta Rumbavana played first compositions by him that have become hits (El Son de Adalberto ).

1973-77 he taught music and literature at the School of Arts in Camagüey and led the way to Conjunto Avance Juvenil. In 1978, he got the offer to lead a band in Santiago de Cuba: Son with 14 Álvarez accepted the offer and some of his musicians. This was followed by first performances abroad, recordings and the hit A Bayamo en coche. Alvarez left the group in 1983 to form a new, more modern group in Havana ( 14 Son was led by Lázaro Rosabal on).

After a year of preparation, this group, Adalberto Álvarez y su Son debuted on February 25, 1984. It was a large cast of trombones in addition to trumpets and a rhythm section of timbales, congas and bongos and piano and tres, which began synthesizer also repeatedly. The Tres played Pancho Amat, since 1989 as a permanent member.
