Adam Afzelius

Adam Afzelius ( pronunciation: [ ˌ ɑ ː ː dam AFSE liɵs ], born October 8, 1750 in Larv, Västergötland, Sweden, † January 20, 1837 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Afzel. ".

Life

Afzelius 1777 professor of Oriental literature, as Carl von Linné's last student in 1785 demonstrator of botany at Uppsala University. He undertook in 1792 a research trip to Sierra Leone. His valuable collections he lost as a result of the plundering of the colony by the French.

In 1796 he was hired as a secretary at the Swedish legation in London. He returned in 1799 returned to his chair in Uppsala and received in 1812 the professorship of materia medica. In 1800 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina.

His ethnographic collection of plants has purchased the University of Uppsala.

His brothers were Johan Afzelius (1753-1837), a chemist at the University of Uppsala, and Pehr by Afzelius (1760-1843), Professor of Medicine ibid. The latter was considered an excellent teacher and practitioner.

After Afzelius the plant genus Afzelia from the legume family was named.
