Adam Almqvist

Adam Almqvist (* February 27, 1991 in Jönköping ) is a Swedish professional ice hockey player who plays for the Grand Rapids Griffins in the American Hockey League since March 2012.

Career

Adam Almqvist began his career in the youth teams of HV71 and showed already the age of 16 his skills as an offensive defenseman in the Swedish J18 Elit, which also provided him with operating times in the same season with the Under-20 juniors in the J20 SuperElit. He also played in 2008 for his Swedish home province of Småland in the national tournament TV spitting, won the championship and was the best assist provider among the defenders.

In the 2008 /09 season he was a regular player of the U20 team of HV71 and the top scoring defender of the J20 SuperElit. Both the pre-and the main round graduated from the team in second place. In the playoffs, the collection succeeded to the finals of the Swedish U20 Junior Championship, in which the team Brynäs IF succumbed after two games. Despite good performances at the Junior Almqvist, however, was not nominated by the Swedish Ice Hockey Association for the Under-18 World Youth Championship 2009, as he was not convinced at international tournaments during the season.

A few months later Almqvist was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the NHL Entry Draft in 2009 in the seventh round at position 210 and thus the penultimate player. As a result, he took in the fall of 2009 in the training camp of the Red Wings, but returned to Sweden, where he continued to play for the time being of HV71 in the U20 Junior. There he showed relatively quickly that he had developed considerably. In 15 games, he scored five goals and prepared 29 matches ago and was over a longer period of time leading scorer in the league. Due to the increase in performance, he was appointed to the senior team in November 2009 and gave his debut in the Elitserien, where in a series with former NHL player Janne Niinimaa he stood on the ice during the 2009/10 season. In May 2011, Almqvist signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Detroit Red Wings, initially on loan parked him for the season 2011/12 with HV71. His AHL debut for their farm team, the Grand Rapids Griffins, was the defender on March 30, 2012 at the home game against the Charlotte Checkers. For the 2012/13 season the defender fix is planned for the AHL squad the Griffins.

Adam Almqvist is a defender whose strengths lie especially in the offensive. Defensively, he has mainly because of its rather slight build even more deficits. He has a good shot and, according to Håkan Andersson, the European scouting director of the Detroit Red Wings, has a very well developed hockey instincts.
