Adam Rogers (musician)

Adam Rogers (born 1965 in New York City ) is an American jazz guitarist, composer and bandleader.

Life and work

Rogers grew up in his hometown of New York City, where he still lives and works. He learned jazz guitar with Barry Galbraith, Howard Collins and John Scofield. During four years at the Mannes Conservatory of Music, he also studied classical guitar with Robert Secrist and Frederic Hand.

He plays primarily in the areas of post-bop, modern jazz and classical music. He is currently a member of the Chris Potter's Underground and combos of John Patitucci Trio. Since the turn of the millennium he is bandleader own formations. In the 1980 - 1990s was a member of the Rogers Michael Brecker Group, the Charles Mingus Orchestra and the fusion band Lost Tribe.

In various cinema film scores, for instance, Michael Almereyda's Hamlet ( 2000), Spike Lee's Jim Brown: All American (2002), Seth Rosenfeld A Brother's Kiss ( 1997), he worked on the soundtrack. He also played occasionally klezmer and classical oriental music with Giora Feidman, David Krakauer and Simon Shaheen.

With Cassandra Wilson, he frequently went on tour; with singer Luciana Souza, he works regularly in a trio with bassist Scott Colley together. Even with Norah Jones, Walter Becker, Paul Simon, Regina Carter, John Zorn, Randy Brecker, Laurie Anderson, Josh Roseman ( Treats for the Nightwalker 2003), Lutz Häfner and Lizz Wright, he played on tours or albums.

In the summer of 1999 he was a soloist of the Dresden Symphony Orchestra in a performance of John McLaughlin composition Apocalypse. In 2008 he received the Paul Acket Award at the North Sea Jazz Festival.

Style

During the years in the jazz-rock fusion band Lost Tribe Rogers played a very funky - rock makeover. Since his break with the band he plays his Gibson Guitar ES -335 with a warm but sharp sound in the style of traditional "Acoustic Jazz" by Pat Martino, George Benson or Wes Montgomery, those three guitarists him in his early years most affected. He is known for high speed with flawless articulation. All About Jazz 's Phil DiPietro described Rogers as a mind- boggling linear improviser.

He also loves challenges arising from the changing of older vintage guitars and amplifiers. He has each collections of over twenty different makes.
