Adamclisi

Adamclisi ( German Adamklissi ) is a village in Dobrogea is in the district of Constanta in Romania.

History

The foundation of the town in Roman times is probably due to a military camp called " Civitas Tropaensium ". The place was famous for its monument of Tropaeum Traiani, which was erected as a sign of victory of the Romans to Trajan's wars against the Dacians 109. Later, veterans settled here in the Dacian Wars. Around the year 200, the city received Roman city rights. After the Romans withdrew from Dacia ruled the Goths " Tropaeum Traiani ". Under Constantine the city received new fortifications and experienced a second bloom. In 587 it was sacked by the Avars and then sank into obscurity for centuries. With the conquest of Dobruja by the Ottoman Empire at the end of the 14th century, the Turks and the Tatars settled. The name Adamklissi or Adam Kilise (Turkish: " Man's Church " ) was created by a mistake. The Turks held the memorial for a church.
